Papercraft Research

For my research I decided to go with Harikrishnan Panicker and Deepti Nair's (also known as Hari & Deeti) papercut light boxes. They are an artist couple that primarily uses layers of watercolour paper in a shadow box that is lit from behind by LED lights that provide a visual narrative.

I chose these artists because I found their art to be more relatable to my work and was instantly intriguing visually. The process work involves a lot of drawing and planning, which i full expect with any projects, but the emphasis on shapes and imagery such as buildings, structures as well as figures immediately caught my attention due to my love for comics. Their work looks like a frame from a movie or a panel that provide the audience a story with its proper use of lighting. Through the small box (sometimes way larger) the pieces capture the scene in such a way that brings us along for the journey. It's like looking through a window into another world with limitless possibilities.

The pieces are intricately detailed and very minimal. It's simplistic form doesn't overwhelm the viewer but at the same time captures the eye. Not only does the piece become alive with the use of the light but it also works as an unlit piece. It provides us with two different and opposing moods for each scene. Hari & Deepti's use of unrealistic and more cartoonish forms for figures in each scene provides a more magical and otherworldly imagery that also helps bring in the extra charm. Even with the amount of shapes or however many stories it is trying to portray in each piece, it never feels crowded and still retains that calm feeling for the viewers.

Their work inspired me because of the way they can provide us with so much in one piece in such a simplistic nature. Sometimes less is more and thats how I like to approach most of my art, and I feel like their work is an example of that. It doesn't take away from their efforts throughout the process because it does involve a lot of accurate detailing, but the outcome of each piece is definitely worth all their hard work.

Here is a clip I found that uses two different color LED lights that provides an extra layer of visual narratives to the piece.

Render Project

For this project, I decided to create another mix. This time I wanted something create something that you would think of as if you were playing mad libs. The result was something that felt magical but at the same time was creepy. Something I kid would think of, but also when an adult would take over the idea. Opposing themes, and ideas that would come together and create something unusual. The idea is that there is a whale jumping out of a fountain of milk flowing up in a cereal bowl. Except the cereal is made up of baby doll heads, and the milk is pepto bismol. Not overly crazy but not at all sane.

Mesh Mixer Assignment

After my feedback session, the "Uhandsil" apparently was the one that stood out. It just needed a clean up especially the bulky part in the middle. I decided to sculpt it further in Mesh Mixer and the results were definitely an improvement. I had to use a different hand and spoon from Thingiverse because the original
files I used weren't importing properly into Mesh Mixer. I also decided to mix "Catcake" with the updated "Uhandsil" and change it a little bit as well.
